Kenya's street children struggle to get accepted

Main Topix: Police Abuse And Detention Of Street Children - Shauri Moyo And Joseph Kang
I found Samuel Indika, eleven, and Morgan Joshua, 13, a few weeks ago at a corner near the Nairobi Railway Station. It was a cold and wet Sunday evening and the boys were huddled together, dressed in light clothing but with no shoes. They were dead asleep on the cold hard pavement atop a small-flattened carton box that could barely fit them both. All they had for cover were light tattered manila sacks, which they later told me they had picked up from Muthurwa market. Upon further inquiry, I established that the two boys had travelled to the capital from Ilungu, Kakamega County and Kisumu. They claim their parents died, a common script that street children generally offer, especially when confronted by strangers. Maina Kiai
Main Topix: International Criminal Court Prosecution - Criminal Investigations Department
Maina KiaiInspector General of police David Kimaiyo has asked rights activist Maina Kiai to record a formal statement with the Criminal Investigations Department regarding claims that his life is in danger . Kiai claims a vigilante group known as Nyaribo Support Group had threatened to torch his Nyeri home, following claims that he is a witness for the International Criminal Court Prosecution in the Kenya cases. The police boss termed the utterances by Kiai as reckless and unbecoming, and condemned him for dragging the name of the president into his woes. Kimaiyo now wants the activist to report to the Director of Criminal Investigation and make a formal report and record his statement together with all the witnesses he may have. Elsewhere, about 450 officers will be formed to deal with hawkers who encroach into Nairobi streets.
