Chemelil sugar factory operations halted
Operations at the Chemelil sugar factory in Kisumu County have temporarily been halted following a breakdown of machines. Services at the factory that resumed operations only a month ago after undergoing major rehabilitation at a cost of over 450 million shillings provided by the Kenya sugar board have temporarily been suspended after a turbine machine broke down. The managing Director Charles Owele told the Media on Saturday the press in an interview that a new machine, costing shs 900,000 shillings has been ordered from manufacturers and was due to arrive in the next two to three weeks.
Following the suspension of operations, mature sugarcane from the area is being delivered to the neighboring Muhoroni sugar factory. Owele said following funding from the European Union and Kenya Sugar board, road infrastructure has improved in the Nyando sugar belt....
